Erin and Zach’s Phon D Sutton engagement photos were the perfect example of why I love this spot along the Salt River for Arizona engagement sessions. Erin and Zach have that best-friend kind of relationship where you can tell they genuinely love spending time together. They have been together for quite a while, and their personalities came through immediately. They are silly, goofy, and clearly know how to have fun together. We even bonded over our shared love of cribbage and other nerdy games, which made the whole session feel more like hanging out than taking photos.

They are also planning a destination wedding in Northern California, so this engagement session was a fun chance to spend time together in Arizona before then. Have a look!

Why I Love Phon D Sutton for Engagement Photos

I love Phon D Sutton because it includes the Salt River, desert scenery, mountain views, and some really beautiful golden hour light all in one area. It also tends to feel less hectic than some of the more popular photo locations around the Phoenix metro area.

From a photography standpoint, that flexibility is a huge plus. We can move around and find different backgrounds as the light changes, and there are opportunities for both more scenic portraits and photos that feel a little more candid.

There is also a road through the area that can make for some really fun photos. With the right timing and a little scouting, we can safely use it when there isn’t traffic coming through. 

Golden Hour Is the Time to Take Phon D Sutton Engagement Photos

For this location, I especially love shooting around golden hour. The way the sun sits around the river and mountains gives us beautiful warm light toward the end of the session, and the sunsets can be incredible. When planning Phon D Sutton engagement photos, I would absolutely build the session around sunset rather than trying to squeeze it into the middle of the day.

For Erin and Zach, that evening light was such a good fit. We had plenty of time to play around with different spots before letting the sunset do its thing toward the end.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose

One of the biggest things I hear from couples before their first professional photo session is that they have no idea what they’re supposed to do. Erin and Zach had never had professional photos taken before, so I knew I couldn’t just put them in front of the camera and expect them to know what to do. I guided them through the entire session with posing direction and prompts, while still leaving plenty of room for their actual personalities to come through.

That’s a big part of how I approach engagement sessions. I’m not expecting you to show up already knowing how to pose. I’ll help with that. Some prompts are more structured, and other moments are much more about getting you to interact with each other and forget that I’m standing there.

With Erin and Zach, that balance worked so well because they were already naturally playful. Once they got comfortable, their connection really took over!
