A courthouse wedding doesn’t have to feel like a quick trip to city hall. In fact, I think Seattle is one of the best places to prove just how beautiful a simple wedding day can be. With dramatic city architecture, incredible views, historic buildings, and some of the most beautiful springtime scenery in the Pacific Northwest, you can create a wedding day that feels incredibly elevated without spending your entire budget on a traditional venue.

Natalie and Danil’s Seattle courthouse wedding is a perfect example. They chose to get married at Seattle Municipal Court before moving to Arizona for Natalie to begin medical school, with their larger wedding celebration planned for the following year. Instead of waiting to celebrate, they created a beautiful, intimate wedding day in Seattle with five of their closest family members, a vintage Rolls Royce, and portraits around the University of Washington.

If you’re considering a Seattle courthouse wedding or elopement, here’s how you can create a day that feels intentional, luxurious, and completely your own.

Why Choose a Seattle Courthouse Wedding?

One of the biggest advantages of a courthouse wedding is that you get to decide what actually matters to you. Instead of spending your budget on a large venue, catering for hundreds of people, or traditions that don’t feel important, you can put that money toward the parts of the day you genuinely care about. For Natalie and Danil, that meant keeping the ceremony small and investing in beautiful photography and experiences throughout the rest of the day.

Seattle Municipal Court is located downtown at the Seattle Justice Center, making it an incredibly convenient starting point for a city elopement. The building itself has a modern architectural feel, and the courthouse is surrounded by some of downtown Seattle’s most recognizable city views.

Seattle Municipal Court judges currently perform courthouse marriage ceremonies at 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Wedding parties are limited to eight people total, including the couple and up to six witnesses. The court also requires couples to submit their ceremony request no earlier than eight weeks before their desired date. 

What Is a Seattle Municipal Court Wedding Like?

If you’ve never been to a courthouse wedding before, you may be imagining something very quick and impersonal. That’s not necessarily the experience.  For Natalie and Danil, they arrived with five family members for their ceremony. Their group included Natalie and Danil, Natalie’s mom and stepdad, her dad, her grandpa, and Danil’s cousin. Her grandpa and Danil’s cousin served as their witnesses.

One thing I would recommend knowing ahead of time is that your appointment time doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll walk directly into your ceremony at that exact minute. Natalie and Danil had a 5 p.m. appointment and ended up waiting around 30 minutes because the court was running behind. Depending on the day and how the schedule is moving, there may be some waiting involved, so I wouldn’t build a portrait-heavy timeline around the exact minute you expect to leave the courthouse.

The court’s current information also notes that photography is permitted at the courthouse during the 30 minutes before check-in and during the ceremony, but they don’t accommodate time for photos after the ceremony. That makes having a photographer who understands the logistics especially helpful. You want to know exactly where to prioritize those courthouse photos before you move on to the rest of your day.

Choosing Your Ceremony Location

One of the things I love about the Seattle Municipal Court is that your courthouse ceremony doesn’t have to feel generic. For Natalie and Danil, their ceremony took place on the rooftop, which gave us beautiful views of downtown Seattle. It was such a good choice for a couple who wanted something simple but still visually impressive.

How to Make a Courthouse Wedding Feel Luxurious

This is probably my favorite part of planning an intimate courthouse wedding! Luxury doesn’t have to mean a huge guest count or an expensive venue. To me, it comes down to the details you choose to prioritize.

For Natalie and Danil, one of those details was a vintage 1960s Rolls Royce. After their courthouse ceremony, we headed to the University of Washington, which is about 20 minutes from downtown, with the Rolls Royce as part of their portrait experience. What could have been a very simple courthouse wedding felt like a full editorial experience. The classic car, historic architecture, city views, beautiful spring blooms, and carefully chosen locations all made the day exactly what it was.

This is one of the reasons I love photographing intimate weddings. When you’re not spending your budget on a large venue and dinner for 150 people, you have more freedom to put those resources toward the things that actually make your day feel special. Maybe that’s a beautiful car, an incredible photographer, a gorgeous outfit, or unforgettable dinner afterward. You get to decide.

Taking Your Seattle Courthouse Elopement to the University of Washington

The University of Washington was such a natural pairing with the courthouse because the campus offers a completely different visual experience from downtown Seattle. The architecture feels historic, while the gardens add a softer, more romantic feel. 

The timing worked especially well because their late-March wedding happened to fall during peak cherry blossom season. And when I say peak cherry blossom season, I mean peak. The University of Washington’s famous Yoshino cherry trees attract thousands of visitors every spring, with the Quad serving as one of the main attractions. The university itself recommends public transportation because of the heavy traffic congestion during blossom season. 

The crowds were massive when we photographed Natalie and Danil. There were quite literally hundreds, if not thousands, of people around the cherry blossoms. So, a little disclaimer when looking at these photos: the gallery is not necessarily an accurate representation of what it felt like to stand in the middle of the Quad that day. There were people everywhere. Fortunately, with some strategic positioning and a little Photoshop magic, we were able to create the clean, romantic images Natalie and Danil were hoping for. If you’re planning your own cherry blossom portraits, just know what you’re walking into. The flowers are absolutely worth it, but you should expect crowds and plan accordingly.

Don’t Skip the Architecture at UW

One of my favorite things about photographing at the University of Washington is that the campus offers so much more than the cherry blossoms. The architecture is incredible! The historic brick buildings, courtyards, pathways, and grand entrances create a completely different feeling from the downtown portion of the day. Even if you’re visiting outside of cherry blossom season, there are plenty of locations that can give your gallery that timeless, editorial quality.

For Natalie and Danil, we also spent some time inside the Suzzallo Library, where the architecture gave us another beautiful set of portraits. 

There are some important rules to know if you’re considering indoor UW photography, though. The university currently states that outdoor wedding and personal event photography does not require a location agreement as long as it doesn’t disrupt normal university activity. Indoor photography is different and requires prior approval through the University of Washington. The university also specifically states that the Suzzallo Library Reading Room is not available for wedding photography. So while you may see beautiful images from this space online, don’t assume that you can simply walk in and recreate them for your own wedding day. Policies can change, and it’s always worth confirming directly with UW before planning your timeline around an indoor location.

How to Build a Full Wedding Day Around Your Courthouse Ceremony

One of my biggest recommendations for couples getting married at the courthouse is to think of the ceremony as just the beginning. Your ceremony might only take a short amount of time, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the day needs to end when you walk out of the building.

That creates an entire wedding experience without ever needing a traditional wedding venue. You could do something similar with a private dinner at a beautiful Seattle restaurant, drinks with your closest friends, a waterfront sunset, or even a hotel stay for the night. The possibilities are much bigger than “just a courthouse wedding.”

I think there’s something incredibly refreshing about a wedding day that doesn’t try to be bigger than it needs to be. Natalie and Danil didn’t need a huge venue or hundreds of guests to make their wedding day feel important. They had the people they loved most, a beautiful city, a vintage Rolls Royce, and the freedom to spend their day exactly how they wanted.
